Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken at the beach of 'Scheveningen' located near The Haque in the Netherlands. It's a beach that streches for miles and miles so it was no trouble at all to find a quiet part just for ourselves.

Time

It was taken during mid-day, when the sun started to slowly descend into the sea. Thus giving a natural soft and warm glow to the picture. The sea was also calm during that period and because there weren't a lot of people the sand was soft and without footprints.

Lighting

I shot this picture with nothing but the natural light of the sun and a gold reflector. By using the gold reflector the skin of the model turned smooth, it gave the colour of the skin a warm and soothing texture.

Equipment

It shot this picture with an Canon EOS 5D Mark 2, with a 24-70mm lens from Canon and an ISO 100 F5.6 - 1/400.

Inspiration

I always dreamed of making a photo with a mermaid. The model in this photo actually has a swimming school specialized in swimming with a mermaid vin. We contacted each other and I described the picture I had in my mind. She was very enthusiastic and so we collaborated for this occasion. I wanted to portray the mermaid with a little touch of fantasy and wanted to add a little more colour that just plain realism. I really wanted the mermaid vin to point upwards, this was the very difficult aspect of the picture. The vin is actually very heavy and it had to be timed just right with the crashing of the waves to get the desired results. We had a really small time window to time this just right, given the lighting of the setting sun etc. I tried 5 shots before getting this one. Fantasy, meer kleur toepassen. Model heeft school mo te zwemmen met vinnen.

Editing

I did a little bit of retouching and used some photoshop actions to highlight some aspects of the picture. Retouching was used to create a finer tone of the skin and I made some special photoshop actions just for this picture.

In my camera bag

The usual things I have in my suitcase are: My modifiers are; The Sigma Art 50mm, The Sigma Art 35mm and my Canon 85mm lens. My Canon 5D Mark 5 and my Canon 6D Some compact flash cards and a gold reflector

Feedback

Try to find a quiet piece of land/beach just for yourself. Take your time getting the lighting right. Make sure you have everything in order before shooting pictures. The mermaid vins are usually very heavy and you can only take a couple of shots before the model gets tired.
