Location
This shot was taken at a local venue that features local NJ bands, at least 3 nights a week. Thanks go to the Pattenburg House for always letting me shoot there. I always get full model releases for my shots, so no worries there. Good practice. I do have a few more favs a like on my web site, and Instagram pages. This is probably my favorite though. I like good contrast in my shots, and an old Ektachrome look.Time
Indoors at night.Lighting
I take many band, festival, and live venue shots, and promote them as well.I wanted to try something different for this shot. Usually it's the stage lighting, and the composition that dominate this type of shot. Instead, I set up 2 remote flashes to either side of the band. For this shot, I turned 1 off, ( the band was complaining about my bright flash,...haha ), and captured this image of Gumbo Billy. An iconic local guitar player and singer in and around Hunterdon County NJ. I of course bracketed my shots, and chose this one to upload. It can be tricky trying to capture an artist, stop the motion, but also having enough light. Normally, I have to use a high ISO, and saturate the image to get good color and stopped motion.Equipment
I use Nikon cameras and Nikon lenses for the most part. I used Wansen remote triggers for my multiple flashes. An SB700 and an old Sunpack, plus the little flash by the hotshoe. The shot was handheld.Inspiration
Music, and the love of the artists and the magic they create.Editing
I don't think I edited this much at all. I have a Lightroom preset that I made that I usually use for indoor images like this to increase contrast, dehaze, and get that film look. This one didn't need much. Maybe a little exposure adjustmant. In my camera bag
Nikon D3100 - SB700 - Wansen Remote triggers. - Nikkor DX 18-55 zoom - Nikkor 70-300 - Tripod - Filters - Light Meter - Clamps - Lens Cleaner - Extra tripods to mount the flashes. ( You can sometimes also use some of the stage equipment to mount your flashes on a bracket.) Model Releases, A MUST ! Other items are added as needed.Feedback
Take your time and plan the shot. The subject will be there for awhile, so no rush. You want the remote flashes off to the side, towards the rear a bit, but not so they flash the lens. Move them around as you shoot. Try 1,2 or 3 flashes, including the built in flash as a fill.Test your remote settings at home before you go out and shoot. Have back up batteries.
