Just on the outskirts of Seattle is a canal connecting Lake Washington and Lake Union with Puget Sound and ulitately, the Pacific Ocean. At the west end lies Ballard Locks, an operation similar to, but on a smaller scale as the Panama Canal. It is a fascinating place to watch boats and ships of all sizes make this transition.
