Behind The Lens

Location

This cluster of grapes was found during a fall harvest at Pontotoc Vineyard in Pontotoc, Texas. Being best friends with one of the owners allowed me an up close and personal tour of the vines.

Time

I call this a lucky shot. We started harvest around 6:30 in the morning. The sun had broken over the vines when a volunteer called me over towards the end of our search for grapes. They were excited to have photos taken of them while they were cutting huge clusters of grapes.

Lighting

This was soft, natural light. Nature at its finest - natural. The surrounding vines helped protect this particular cluster from harsh, direct light.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D750, 18-200 mm lens.

Inspiration

I wanted to capture the essence of the hard work that goes into making a single bottle of wine. These grapes had to be protected from predators,... harsh elements. After harvesting they were separated from the stems, pressed, and strained. It was an amazing process to be a part of.

Editing

From what I recall, I increased the contrast between the colors to bring attention to the detail of the individual grapes. The various shades found in the grapes and leaves were gorgeous.

In my camera bag

I carry a pack of double AA batteries, Lens cloth, and my Nikon 18-200 mm lens.

Feedback

The key to this photo was drawing the eye to the grapes unique characteristics. While I would have loved to use a tripod, I had to work with the moment. To balance contrast of colors, early morning or late evening sun is best. Nothing harsh. Shooting RAW images is best for full control of editing.
