Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo while aimlessly walking on Melrose Ave one evening near my apartment.

Time

This photo was taken during the magical time of day where the sky turns fiery red and changes every few minutes. I love walking at this time and letting my mind wander.

Lighting

The time of day was crucial in inspiring this shot, as the red sky contrasted with the green light. Had the sky been any other color, this shot may not have happened. When I shoot, I always tend to look for stark color contrast and push it farther apart in post.

Equipment

I used a Canon t2i with a 135mm f/2.8 vintage lens I found at Goodwill for $5. A simple converter ring was used as well, but a bit of thrifting resulted in my favorite lens.

Inspiration

Color contrast always appeals to me and stand out in my vision, so I was inspired by the darkness of the tree against the brightness of the sky, complimented by the green light for balance.

Editing

I shoot in RAW and the only post-processing on this photo was the RAW correction. I tend to push the color contrast as far as possible without tearing the image apart. Any haziness is attributed to the unique aging of the vintage lens.

In my camera bag

On casual walks like this, I have a purse that fits my camera and that is it. On a normal photo outing I would bring my camera, a 50mm lens, a wide-range zoom lens, an extra battery, a flash, and a prism for some flare.

Feedback

Become a vigilant observer of the world around you and capture the details that catch your eye. I love using a 135mm lens because it feels like the perspective from which we see details - in this sense I can recreate the small scene that caught my eye out of a larger scene. Eventually, you will correlate the lens to your vision and the connections will happen quickly, but until then, just go shoot!
