Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at a Cider Mill in my hometown of Rochester Hills, Michigan. I just started this photography hobby so I'm always looking at things in a new way and the colors of the squash and unique shapes and textures caught my eye and looked so interesting, so I snapped away!

Time

I took the photo in the early afternoon on a beautiful Michigan fall day, where the sky is the bluest blue and there were no clouds. The squash was in a large wooden bin under the awning of the Cider Mill so there was no direct light but it was so sunny out that it still cast some cool lighting on the subjects.

Lighting

This was taken under an awning outside at a Cider Mill so there was little to no direct sunlight coming in but it was so bright out that day that a few of the squash still had a nice shine to them from the brightness and it really made the colors pop.

Equipment

I have a few different cameras but believe I took this one with a Nikon D3200, no tripod or lens, just handheld and used my macro lens.

Inspiration

Fall in the midwest is beautiful and Michigan in particular has outstanding fall colors when it comes to the trees. This particular day was gorgeous outside with the fall colors in full swing, so I decided to get in the spirit of fall and head to a Cider Mill with my camera to try to capture some of the beauty.

Editing

This photo was so simple that it didn't require much post processing at all other than a slight adjustment to the color to bring out more of the oranges and yellows. I've been drawn to minimalist type photography for this very reason!

In my camera bag

Since I'm a beginner to photography, right now I'm pretty much exclusively working with my starter camera, my Nikon D3200. I always have my macro lenses with me as well as my portrait lens and since I love to do outdoor photography and nature shots, I don't usually have to use a flash, but I do have it with me just in case!

Feedback

Don't overlook the simple things. I never thought a photo of a box of squash would turn out so pleasing but sometimes it's the most overlooked things that make for the best photography. There's beauty in everything, you just have to keep your eyes open and your camera ready!
