Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at the Monza Autodrome in northern Italy, more specifically the shot was taken from a small alley coasting the "curva del Serraglio" just before the underpass of the old banking curve.

Time

The memory of shooting this photo will always be a prime one in my memory as I had to endure extreme weather before and after shooting this. It was the saturday of the 2017 Italian GP and for the first 40 minutes of the first practice of the day the cars didn't run because of extreme water on the track. First cars came out at approx. 11.40 as the raining slowed down a bit, that was the time I shot this photo of Kevin Magnussen telling myself it was a gold opportunity to feature the sheer speed of a racecar blasting through the rain in a dark morning at close to 300 kph.

Lighting

The lighting in this image is one of the most important factors as I wanted to capture that dark, cloudy light of the Monza circuit that morning. That mysterious and dark-ish light that created the perfect conditions to capture the absurd amount of rain being lifted by the cars tires and the red rail light that would illuminate the water and the asphalt behind the car.

Equipment

I shot this photo with basic elements, a Canon 700D, an old 18-55 lens and a firm hand.

Inspiration

I always wanted to capture the raw speed and danger of an extreme racecar as the one driven by K-Mag in this photo, Monza circuit is the fastest in the championship and what better place than one of the fastest straights on the circuit to get my ideal photo done? Most of all I was driven by the fact that I really wanted to stand out from the crowd and not have a static, boring looking photo, all the things around me were exciting, the soudn of the cars, the rain lifted by the tires, their monstrous speed, it would have been foolish not trying to capture that adrenaline and that excitement. I wanted to show to amateurs photographers like me, that you can take a great looking photo, even if you don't have prime equipment or a photographer accreditation.

Editing

As I was in the crowd and not actuall on the prime spot an accredited photographer would have, I cut the photo trying to eliminate things in excess like some of that horrendous looking fence at the bottom. I upped the light curve and downed the shadows so that the photo had a more intense look, upped the contrast bit a small number and adjusted the colors so that they would look a bit more vivid, I then added a bit of vignette to center the focus of the viewer on the front part of the car and the water lifted by the tires.

In my camera bag

My two lenses, a 50mm f1.8 and the 18-55 mm, cleaning lense kit, my flash and spare batteries, a spare 16GB SD card and a kit of ND filters.

Feedback

Try not to be discouraged from not having a media pass or a photographer one, great photos can be taken even with basic equipment and from the stands too! You just got to get creative and think outside the box, don't try to emulate the photos that accredited photographers take because you just can't, rather try to share your own point of view and use stands in your own favour! Work your passion, don't give up!
