Behind The Lens

Location

On a trip to Sicily with my wife, we stopped at the wonderful town Taormina. While walking down the main strip I saw this outdoor display of painting, on steps, outside a gallery, that was at the top of the steps. The lighting and shadow seemed great, so I took the shot.

Time

At about two o'clock the sun was in the perfect position for this location. The town had music playing from speakers on the light poles. Wonderful Italian music that set the atmosphere of being in a fantastic Italian town. Definitely a great place to visit. Just a short way from Mount Etna, a live volcano, the scenery is truly magnificent.

Lighting

As I said before, the sun was in the perfect position to give e a contrast between shadow and light. The shadow cut through the center of the steps to give the image a balance between light and shadow.

Equipment

I took this image handheld with my Canon DSLR with a simple 18-55mm Canon lens. It shows that a quality image can be made with not very sophisticated equipment. No flash, shot at F/8, 1/160 sec.m ISO-100.

Inspiration

The gallery owner was making the best of his space to display his product and attract customers to climb the flight of steps to look to see more. Being at the top of the steps made his shop difficult to find, if you did not know it was there. The shop owner used his most problematic drawback for his business as as asset. I liked that.

Editing

I didn't do any post processing because I wanted the image to remain just as I had seen the location. I felt lucky to have captured the scene as I saw it.

In my camera bag

Since taking this image I have increased my equipment carry along considerably. I carry my Canon Rebel T5 body, 18-55mm lens, 50mm prime lens, 18-200MM Zoom, Flash and shutter release. Sometimes, depending on where and what I am looking to shoot I will carry along a tripod, my 70-300 telephoto lens and/or 55-250 telephoto lens.

Feedback

Europe has an amazing amount of locations and material to photograph. A walk down any street present a myriad of opportunities for great photos. The same locations have a variety of opportunities whether it is day or night. I especially love traveling Italy. From north to south it presents a time warp of architecture, from ancient to modern, and landscapes that just won't quit being incredible. Carry a camera everywhere, which is not difficult today with the high quality cameras on every smartphone, and shoot away. You really cannot take too many photos. Most of all, enjoy!
