This photo was taken on the beautiful beaches of Kill Devil Hills, NC.Time
I woke up early, right around 4:00 am to gather my gear, and make my way over to the beach. Sunset was around 5:30, and this photo captured the awe of this beach sunrise.Lighting
It was a daunting task to try to capture all the beautiful colors projected onto the sand and the sky. I took the image with a extremely closed aperture of f/22, a low iso of 160, and a shutter speed of 1/25. This allowed the image to be a bit dark, which is what I was aiming for. I knew it was easier to bring out the colors of a darker image rather than trying to darken a brighter image.Equipment
I am an amateur photographer, and have only been shooting for around a year. At the time, this photo was taken only about ten days after getting my first camera, a Canon EOS Rebel SL2. Along with the camera body came the kit lens, a EFS 18-55 mm F4.0-5.6. This camera and lens setup and a small 6 inch tripod was all I needed to create this photo.Inspiration
Sunrise pictures on the beach in general are boring to me. They all are the same: sun on the horizon, sand in the foreground, and the ocean in the middle. I wanted to do something different. Upon first glance, the image is not rlly that different from your “standard sunrise photo”. However, to make this image different, I altered my vantage point. I placed my small tripod into the sand, leaving my camera lens right next to the sand. This low vantage point created a different feel to the image, emphasizing the color of the sun kissed sand, and ultimately dramatizing the sunrise itself.Editing
As I mentioned before, the picture was quite dark out of camera. To bring out some color, I increased the exposure a bit, and increased the highlights. These two adjustments brought out all the colors, along with a hint of some more saturation. In my camera bag
My bag does not contain of anything more than the basics: my camera, my kit lens, my 6 inch tripod, and my 3 foot tripod. However, I am looking to expand this setup by adding a 14mm f2.8 lens. This lens will help me pursue astrophotography, allowing me to capture some of my first Milky Way photographs.Feedback
What I learned so far as a photographer is that you do not need the best gear to produce the best images. Knowledge and creativity is the ultimate key to good photographs. With a creative mind and the understanding of concepts such as lighting, composition, focus, and perspective, there are limitless possibilities of photographs that you can take. The best way to learn some of these concepts and gain a creative mind is by getting out and shooting. Watching hours of YouTube on how to create a specific image orscrolling through Instagram can be a good spark to your own creativity, but the only way to make original photographs is by taking them yourself via your own creative mind. So the next time you see an image that makes you think “wow, that is incredible”, do not try and replicate that image. Instead, make that image better, by adding your own twist, or shooting a different subject.
