Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Etosha pan in Namibia! I remember like it was yesterday and I must have as blessed as the Zebra looking at us. It was on my second day in the Etosha pan and on my first trip to Africa nd I had been really excited about seeing the local wildlife. I had already fallen head over heels for the natural beauty of Namibia - the light, the sounds, etc - but I tried to keep my expectations low for the National Pars, being fully aware that I might not get to see the Big Five, or even a Zera , but boy was I wrong ! I got really lucky and by early evening of day one had seen almost all of them.

Time

I was then really fascinated by the social behaviour of the Zebra herds in the park, which is why I took a long time just watching them, how lovelingly they interacted which each other, seeming completely at ease. It was around noon on day two, that I stumbled across these too and just instantly loved the experison of mere bliss of the one looking at us.

Lighting

As this photo was taken around mid-day the light was rather hard and constrats stark, also it was a rather foggy day, which is why i decided to convert it into B&W to highlight the feautures of the horses.

Equipment

This was shot with a Panasonic Lumix G3 with a 45mm-200mm Vario lens at f/6,3. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

As mentioned above, I was phascinated how easy to observe the social structures and behaviours where and how human they seemed and I was keen on what appeared to be their overall mood.

Editing

I did not make any major changes to the picture, just the most basic of black and white conversion, didn't even need to play around with f, values or gradients.

In my camera bag

The first thing I pack these days is my Olympus M. Zuiko 45mm f/1.9 lens. I am just in love with this lens, it is light, super light sensitive and gives you a lovely bokeh in that price-range, which is more that a passionate hobby-portrait-photographer can ask for! My second favourite one is the Panasonic Leica Vario Elmarit 12-60mm f/2.8-4. For me it is an almost perfect alrounder from landscape to portrait and I could not live without it.

Feedback

Patience is key! Animals usually will look spooked , or stresse if you drive by fast and interact loudly with your peers. Take your time, and try to blend in with your environment as good as possible. It might take some time, but trust me, once they start to relax and behave naturally you will be rewarded with some stunning shots!
