Forests in North Western Zambia and Katanga in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are under threat from massive urban expansion and mining. The rapidly growing towns often have populations that are not on the power grid. This has created a huge demand for charcoal as a source of energy. This in turn has led to rural village communities chopping down trees and turning them into charcoal to meet the urban demand. Soon there will be no forests left to celebrate.
