Amidst its sprawling glitz & glamour, empowering high rises, and a life style that never stops, Mumbai also houses the world's largest open air laundry - The Dbobi Ghat at Mahalaxmi.
This 140 year old British era Dhobi Ghat is world's biggest human powered washing machine and also a very famous tourist attraction, where every day hundreds of dhobis beat the dirt out of thousands of kilograms of soiled Mumbai clothes & linens in 1026 open air troughs.
The irony that the very dhobis that clean the dirt of bureaucracy, aristocracy & corporate have to live in utterly soiled conditions with very little value (as low as rupees 5 per cloth) of their labour & toil.
With more privatisation of laundries at railways, hospitals & hotel industries their conditions is getting from bad to worse.
To preserve this dying heritage speedy efforts is needed from the State Government.
