I took this photo In the Cevennes Mountains in the south of France during a walk at the end of summer, crossing pine forests and pastures ; this area has been described by R.L. Stevenson in his book "Travels With a Donkey In the Cevennes" where he describes his rawhide country.Time
I remember this was at the end of the afternoon when sun was going down, specially in these valleys tucked down among the hills , the hard summer light was going softer through the pines branches and filtered by the green needles.Lighting
The soft light was falling on the pine cones in the foreground, and I had the idea to use the other pine cones in the background, blurried with a shallow depth of field, as a replica of the subject.Equipment
I use my Canon 5D Mark II with a faithful 24-105 that I find very handy during hiking, This is the second identical lens I use, I replaced the first one as soon as it began to fail, as I couldn't stand to miss it...I usually use tripods for panorama landscapes and try to avoid flash to keep natural ligtning, but I like to use graduate filters to balance landscape lighting;Inspiration
Usually you find mostly dried and brown pine cones, open and dead ; these ones were new and fresh pine cone with an unusual non conic shape, and a nice green color (I had quite to stop myself from eating them...), lightly outlined by white pine resin.Editing

During my hikes I carry both my Canon EOS 50D and 5D II, several lenses (16-35mm, 24-105mm 70-200mm and 100-400mm mounted on the 50D, plus some graduated square filters and tripod, of course cleaning and protective equipment, spare batteries...Feedback
Look for the light and shadows lighting the subject you choose, and if you want use a narrow depth of field with a blurry background , the latter is nevertheless important to build a strong composition, in order not to do disturb your audience.
