The Fort of Antibes.
This unusual shaped fortress is shaped like a star, with a circular courtyard in the centre.
The French Army were based here, to defend the south of France, whilst at war with Italy.
Italian borders then began after Nice. (Now of course, it is a lot further south, after Menton and Monaco.)
The French Army would patrol the top floor of the fortress, where they had a perfect advantage point.
Once the war between France and Italy was over, the building was then used for training the new army recruits.
It became disused and fell in disrepair. Until the local council purchased the land and used the outdoor buildings and grounds as a sports training centre, which it still is today.
They did not use the fortress though, so this was sold back, renovations began and it is now open to tourists to view its splendour and learn from its history.
South of France, August 2017.
