Behind The Lens

Location

This was on a group shoot at Harbour Studio in North Shields, England. I was a green as grass newbie and only my second time shooting models in a studio session. The local team was on hand to help and guide me, few shots were as good as this one, but a great experience, all the same.

Time

What time of day? It was a cold January evening, I think, about an hour's drive from home, only got a little lost, but made it, obviously.

Lighting

This was very different for me. Several sets were going off around the studio, but this was more dimly lit, a high left beauty dish and a slight right soft box. The rich tones I thought were going to be too dark, but I tend to prefer the low key over high key shots.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D5200, the standard 55mm kit lens.

Inspiration

Inspiration? Eva was all the inspiration I needed, she was a natural, beautiful and easily gave great lines and shapes needing little direction if at all.

Editing

Being pretty new at the time, just some frequency separation, spot healing, some hue and saturation adjustments, etc.

In my camera bag

At the time my bag was nearly empty, but now always carry my go-to Nikon 24-70mm f2.8, 50mm, 35mm, 70-300mm and the old 17-55mm kit lens.

Feedback

Sounds silly, but use your eyes! Trust what you see (after checking that all your settings are correct for the situation, obviously). Take your time to look, really see, and view the result often. Check for detail, because to me, nothing ruins a shot more than a wrong detail - awkward foot position, clawed hand, knuckle toes (lol), missing catchlights, etc, let your eye find the detail that will catch your eye in the shot later and correct it.
