Geometric-guilloché lathes were developed early in the 19th century to combat forgery in bank notes and postage stamps. The lathe was able to generate intersecting and interlacing patterns of fine lines in various shapes, which were almost impossible to forge by hand-engraving. They were used by many national mints. Today, you can find these tools for a few cents on the streets of India.
