Location
During a newborn portrait session I was commissioned for in Charlottesville, VA, I had the opportunity to capture a portrait of three generations. I wanted something more subtle that showed their connection.Time
This was late afternoon but in my open door studio so the light was not too harsh and they were shaded overhead.Lighting
I use natural light to define and give a sense of the mood. For this shot it was important to have detail in the hands, and I didn't want it to be too soft. I used the available light for added definition.Equipment
Canon body and lens. 100 mm L series. Hand held.Inspiration
We had three generations together at one time. While most of the session was focused on the newborn, I wanted to incorporate the bond these three females held as well as the generations they represented.Editing
I punched up and the definition to really accentuate the age of the grandmothers vs the younger two.In my camera bag
Canon Mark III, Canon 6 D, Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM , Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens (favorite lens!)Feedback
Sometimes we get caught up in the 'job' we are hired to do and it can be easy to disconnect from the why of what we do. I was touched by the three of them coming to the session together and by their obvious bond. It's important to remember to connect with the emotions that inspire you to take portraits of people, to begin with. When you begin to focus on some of the tiny details you can capture something invaluable, much more meaningful.
