Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a field very close the Abberton Reservoir, near Colchester in Essex. I'd seen the view previously and revisited it a couple of days later.

Time

It was taken at around 8:30pm on July 12th, just as the 'magic hour' was kicking in. I jumped a ditch and set up the tripod.

Lighting

That time of day is great and I was very fortunate to have such great clouds as well. I'm learning about long exposure at the moment so I was keen to capture my movement. I used a 10 stop ND filter for this shot for 36 seconds. I didn't get to take many shots this particular evening as I received a very sad phone call and had to make a hasty exit.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D5500, my first dslr camera purchased this year having only picked up the photography bug after about a 30 year break from taking photos and was mounted on a tripod that I was given about 30 years ago also! The ND filter was a 10 stop Cokin Nuances.

Inspiration

Every photographer wants to take a decent lone tree photo - don't they? I've seen so many great shots on sites such as ViewBug, that I have always kept my eyes open for a suitable scene. Now I have found one I'll try and revisit it at different seasons - I'm actually looking forward to some snow this year!

Editing

I did do some fairly minor adjustments using Lightroom for the iPad app, which is free and this picture was edited using the more basic version than the current upgrade (which is far better once you get used to it). I added some warmth and increased some black as far as I recall and no doubt some clarity.

In my camera bag

Just my Nikon D5500 with the standard 18-55 kit lens and a 70-200 nikkor zoom lens that's on permanent loan from my Dad; a couple of the Cokin Nuances filters (a 10 stop and a 6 stop); 3 graduated Cokin ND filters of the resin variety; a remote shutter release' a spare battery; and lens cleaning cloths. Not that much really.

Feedback

Keep your eyes peeled for suitable compositions - I spotted a couple more potential shots tonight when I was out on a bike ride with my son that I'll be visiting soon.
