Behind The Lens

Location

this photo was taken at Lucky Bar, in downtown Victoria, BC, Canada. It was the debut performance of NEON HIGH featuring Kat Selah and Jon Baglo.

Time

NEON HIGH hit the stage around 10 pm in the evening, last fall.

Lighting

Lighting in clubs is always a challenge, and especially for my camera - a Lumix FZ 1000 - it's not a great low light camera, so I had to try many different settings to get a decent photo. As my son plays in several bands and is often in a theatre setting, I'm learning about the lighting and to this day, I'm still not crazy about the colours of the spotlights. When I can't work with the lighting, I switch my photo's to black and white in post. Some of the colours are just too difficult to work with.

Equipment

I don't use flash when taking concert photo's - it's usually frowned upon to use flash photography. It was just me and my camera wandering around in front of the stage trying to get some decent shots. My camera has a fixed lens, so it's easy to zoom in and zoom out.

Inspiration

Whenever my son is performing on stage, I usually take my camera along - mainly so I can get some good shots for him to use in his portfolio. I won't say that every shot turns out great and during a 2 hour show, I can easily take up to 300 + photo's, trying to get the 'money photo'. With NEON HIGH, the subjects are quite photogenic and a joy to photograph.

Editing

In post, I would have lightned the image a little, and added some contrast as well as cut out any noise. This photo was originally coloured with a red spotlight, which is why I turned it to black and white. I prefer black and white because the photo's just look more dramatic.

In my camera bag

My camera, a camera strap, lens cleaner, batteries, battery charger, memory cards in a case, wires for connecting my camera to my computer, a bottle of water (for me)

Feedback

Be patient. Take lots of photo's at different angles. With digital, you can take lots of photo's and easily delete the ones that are out of focus or just aren't working for you. Remember, that in post, if the colours of spotlights isn't working for you, you can change the colours, fade them or change the whole photo to black and white. I can easily take 100 photo's and only like 3 or 4. Try different settings on your camera - most digital cameras have a setting for 'scenes' - try some of these too, or go to the 'filters' settings and try some of the filters that are built into your camera. Most of all, have fun with your photography!
