Behind The Lens

Location
I took this photo in my house in Orlando, FL against a grey Savage seamless paper backdrop.
Time
Probably around 2PM on a Sunday? That's the beauty of studio work; full lighting control!
Lighting
The main punch of light to Sheyda's face and body is coming from a gridded 24" beauty dish slightly above her camera right. Immediately behind it to add fill was a 4' octa-box. Both lights were Flashpoint XPLOR600 mono lights. I like them because they have HSS and in a non-traditional location like my living room, I can increase the shutter to whatever I choose to zero out the room (make the strobes the only visible light source).
Equipment
I shot this handheld on a Sony A7rII with a Sony Zeiss 85mm f/1.8 lens.
Inspiration
I worked with a great team of collaborators to grow the portfolio of our hair/makeup artist, and give a bit of instruction to another photographer that was assisting.
Editing
I used Lightroom to adjust levels and curves, then went into Photoshop to retouch skin using frequency separation and add a bit more depth through dodge/burn.
In my camera bag
I'm in the process of making the full switch from Canon to Sony, so I'm behind a bit in gear. My ONLY dedicated Sony lens is the 85mm right now, but I'm eyeing several vintage manual lenses. Having the electronic viewfinder in the Sony and being able to manually focus using focus magnification with focus peaking is a GAME CHANGER! Coupled with the huge image resolution, this camera system is a great option for those of us that want medium format 'lite' without the huge price tag.
Feedback
Youtube! If you're new to studio lighting, go online and watch some of the COUNTLESS video tutorials on lighting. Set up each light and test them one at a time to ensure each one is doing exactly what you want. Lastly, practice, practice, PRACTICE!
