Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from Fisher Park at Cocoa Beach, Florida.

Time

I started taking photos shortly before sunrise on this day. I never know what I’m going to get when I head to the beach and the morning I took this the sky continued to change as the sun moved up through the clouds. The rays coming down and going up where just breathtaking and as the boat moved through the scene I waited till it was in just the right spot to capture this image.

Lighting

I wish every sunrise was this beautiful! I love when the clouds sit above the horizon for capturing the sunrise. If it’s hazy or the clouds sit too low it’s hard to see the sun or the rays as it hits the horizon. Beautiful or not I never regret heading to the beach for sunrise. Just being there and hearing the sounds of the waves is therapeutic, but when it’s beautiful it’s almost magic.

Equipment

I used a Canon 5d Mark lll with a 24-105 f/4L lens. That’s my standard sunrise set up. No tripod, although one might be beneficial.

Inspiration

I took this photo as a part of a week long project. My goal was to show up at the same exact spot for sunrise for a whole week. I got lucky as the sunrises the whole week were beautiful and so extremely diverse. This image was one of my favorites from the series, although it was hard picking a favorite.

Editing

I did some post-processing in Lightroom but not a lot. I mostly brought up the shadows some and added a little clarity to the image. I saturated the blues slightly but not to much as I wanted to keep it looking natural.

In my camera bag

I always have my Canon 5d Mark lll and Canon 24-105 f4L lens with me. I like the versatility of this lens as I can shoot landscapes and portraits with it. My favorite portrait lens is my Canon 70-200 f/2.8L.

Feedback

I think the best advise when shooting sunrises is “just show up”. I never know when I’m going to catch the perfect sunrise, but the more often I show up the more likely I am to capture it. Beyond that I almost alway shoot about a full stop under what my in camera meter says. Some sunrises change dramatically as the sun rises through the clouds. There have been a few mornings when I thought I was done and the scene would change dramatically. I also play with my f/stop as the sun gets brighter. Shooting at f/16 or higher can make the sun look like a starburst through the clouds.
