Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Butterfly House at Blenheim Palace, in Oxfordshire, England. I was living in Bristol. England at the time, and in June of 2013 my sister was there for a visit. One day she and I met an English friend of mine at Blenheim, and while there we enjoyed the beautiful gardens, took a tour of the house, and then visited the Butterfly House.

Time

It was late afternoon by the time we arrived at the Butterfly House. Summer in England means that on some days there will be almost 17 hours of sunlight, so there was still plenty of light even though it was around 3:30 or 4PM. Also, the Butterfly House is located in a greenhouse, which allowed for a lot of light all around.

Lighting

I used only natural lighting.

Equipment

This photo was taken with a Canon Powershot A470, with no flash or tripod.

Inspiration

There were butterflies all around inside the greenhouse, which was wonderful, but also a bit overwhelming. Before taking this shot I was just standing still and looking at everything, and then I happened to see this butterfly resting on a bush nearby. I was amazed at how beautiful its wings were, so I turned slowly with my camera, focused the lens on it and took the shot, hoping it wouldn't fly away before I got the photo!

Editing

I cropped the photo a little in order to focus more on the butterfly.

In my camera bag

I usually have my Canon Powershot and my Samsung smartphone, which is the back-up.

Feedback

The only advice I can give when in a greenhouse full of butterflies is to stand still and scan the surfaces of everything - walls, plants, drains, and so on - because you never know where a butterfly may choose to land.
