This photo was taken at dawn on one of Auckland's suburban beaches called eastern Beach. It's always such a beautiful spot, usually full of tranquilly and peacefulness away from the hustle and bustle of the City.Time
Being an early riser, I love photographing the dawn. There's generally no one else around and so you have a time of quietness when you can relax and enjoy the scenic wonder unfolding before your eyes.Lighting
On elf the aspects that I really like about this particular photograph is the utter stillness of the day. The sun was justing popping its head up over the Coromandel peninsula in the distance and the tide was on the turn. That combined with the really interesting cloud formations that that seemed to be cris-crossing made for a very serene scene.Equipment
It was shot handheld as i was walking along the beach. The technical details are of the shot are:- Camera NIKON D7000 Shutter speed 1/320 Aperture f/9 Focal length 18 mm 35mm equivalent 27 mm ISO 100Inspiration
Eastern beach at dawn is just a beautiful place to be, so it is only natural to want to photograph the beauty of nature as a reminder of just how special a place it is.Editing
Very little post processing was needed for this shot. Just pulled back the exposure a little for the sun. Slight correction of the highlights and shadows, then lastly lower the exposure from the top and the bottom so the eye is drawn to the centre of the photo. In my camera bag
I have two kits that i take along with me on a shot depending on where it is I'm going and what it is that I'm hoping to shoot. The usual full kit is a Lowerpro wheelie bag that I can fit almost all my lenses in (apart from a 500mm) plus either one of two camera bodies and a range of filters, spare batteries, flash, mini tripod and cleaning cloths. I generally take this where I know I can wheel it around as it is rather large and bulky. The advantage of this kit is I can fit in into the overhead luggage locker on most aircraft (slightly cut down though so it is no overweight). The second kit is a Lowerpro backpack that I'll take one camera body, one or two lens and spare batteries and few odds and ends that I think I may need. Generally use this if I'm out in the countryside, up mountains or trekking overseas as It is so much lighter and more convenient than the full kit. It also fits in smaller aircraft luggage bins as I never put my camera equipment in a hold.Feedback
Guess the only advice I can give is that the early bird gets the best dawn shot. If you're hading out for a dawn shot, give yourself plenty of time to get there, survey the scene and get setup without having to rush. For me, part of the enjoyment is actually being able to take time to be in nature and just looking and feeling the wonder of creation. The photograph is the bonus.
