Location
This photo was taken at the top of Witkoppen Road, Fourways, Johannesburg, South Africa.Time
Taken around 06h40 according to the metadata, but I think the time on the camera was incorrect. Think it was more like early afternoon 13h00 or so.Lighting
Bright sunlight from right hand side.Equipment
Handheld. Sony A100. 100-300mm zoom lens at 140mm. ISO 100, f10 @ 320.Inspiration
Chose the spot as it was at the top of a steep climb, which slowed most of the cyclists, providing many photo opportunities.Editing
Cropped to remove distracting backgrounds, spectators and adjusted exposure and created movement blur.In my camera bag
Had the Sony A100 and standard kit lenses 18-50 and 70-300 at the time. Later added A55, but have now replaced both with A7iii. Have 18-70 f2.8 G-master lens and flash gun.Feedback
This was at the annual 94.7 cycle race, with about 20 000 entrants, so advice with any mass participant event, is to get to your chosen point as early as possible, as crowds of spectators can prevent you from getting a decent vantage point. Try to shoot a faster shutterspeed to stop the action or choose a vantage point where participants are naturally slowing down such as the top of the hill in this shot, unless of course conveying speed is the aim.
