Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is taken in the old cementary in Reykjavík - called Hólavallakirkjugarður. It is near the center of town westward from the lake.

Time

The picture is taken February 26 2017 before noon but not very early.

Lighting

The day is short in Iceland during the winter. It really doesn't matter - the light is nearly always blueish from November through February!

Equipment

The picture is taken hand held with Fujifilm X100S - and that's it. No filter, tripod, flash or anything. I must have turned the exposure compensation button to overexpose a little.

Inspiration

My happiest childhood memories is waking up early in the morning and discover that the whole city has been covered in snow during the night and everything is white. It took 2 minutes to get ready and go out and play! I got that childish feeling on February 26 2017 when it had been snowing the night before so it was about 50-60 cm deep. But as a grown man and soon a senior citizen I go out and play with my cameras. I also wanted to test my Fujifilm X100S I had recently bought second hand. And I often go to the old cementary to test lenses - don't ask me why because I don't know! I think that I just fell in love with the little camera that day.

Editing

Just basic adjustments in Lightroom and then Nik Collection... I think just a little detail extraction.

In my camera bag

I used my Canon 5D Mark-III and 50mm f1.2 to take most of the pictures that day - as I was a "Canon-man". But I got my Fujifilm X100S with me. I bought it second-hand because I wanted a lighter camera. My Canon gear was far to heavy and I was getting tired carrying it around. I just fell in love with the small Fujifilm camera and after that I sold it and my Canon and changed my camera system. I use the Fujifilm X-system. I have Fujifilm X-Pro2, X-T2 and X100F. I take the X100F with me most of the time. When I go out especially to take pictures I take one of the bigger cameras apart from the X100F. My favoured Fujifilm lenses are the 23mm f2, 16mm f1.4 and 55-200mm. I usually take two of these with me depending on the situation. I have the 18-55 mm "kit-lens". Don't use it very much but I will never sell it. I started taking pictures in the 60's so I like prime lenses. And rangefinder cameras of course! Well, I am still collecting Fujinon lenses and planning to gradually buy a lot more of them. I have a light Gitzo tripod and a lot of Lee filters. But now I am buying filters I can screw on the lens as they are lighter to travel with. I want to have a polariser for every lens and am focusing buyng filters for my 16mm lens (I can also use them for my 12mm Samyang). One thing: Fujifilm cameras are easy to use when manually focusing. Apart from using modern manual lenses I recommend experimenting with old vintage lenses.

Feedback

Well - when there is a lot of snow in a city the most important thing is to be completely free and able to walk around. To be worried about a car, a parking place etc. will ruin your day. When you are photographing and there is a lot of snow - consider your exposure carefully. You might need to overexpose relative to what the lightmeter in the camera is recommending. And you might consider using flash in some circumstances even though I do that rarely.
