Behind The Lens

Location

Arlington National Cemetery

Time

Early afternoon

Lighting

I happened by the monument when the sun was at it's highest that day. That allowed for the photo to have very little shadowing, leaving the natural colours to show vividly.

Equipment

Surprisingly, this photo was taken with my BlackBerry Priv mobile telephone.

Inspiration

Being a veteran myself, I wanted to visit Arlington to walk through the cemetery and take in the history of the military and pay respect to those who have served. I was sure to take many photographs of the monuments throughout the cemetery on my walking tour. I'm happy that this photo turned out so well.

Editing

The photo is exactly as it was photographed. I prefer to not use filters, overlays, etc., to "correct/enhance" pictures that I take. I believe in waiting for the right moment to take a photo, instead of adjusting (or tampering with) my photos to make it appear like I'm a better photographer than I really am. Real photography takes patience and skill. All of these adjustments allowed by digital photography nowadays just seems like cheating.

In my camera bag

Besides my mobile, which is usually used to capture quick candids, I also carry a Medium Format, a Nikon 35 mm with multiple lenses, and a cheap plastic Holga. Even though I have some really expensive equipment, the Holga usually takes the most interesting photos.

Feedback

For a quality shot, just take the time to look at the surroundings and the natural light around your subject. It's easy to line up a good shot if you keep in mind the effect that even the smallest of objects in the background will play in the overall role of the subject in the photo.
