Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Auchingarrich wildlife park in Scotland on a family day out.

Time

The shot was taken in the afternoon. It wasn’t the hottest of days but the sun was coming in and out of the clouds and the rain was just starting as I took it.

Lighting

As it was just starting to rain, the grey overcast took away the harsh light from the sun. As this was in an open field I think it helped with the final look of the image.

Equipment

This was taken on a Fujifm finepix S4530 with an aperture of f/20 and iso 400. As I’m only just getting to grips with photography I don’t yet own a DSLR. There was other equipment involved.

Inspiration

I was walking around the wildlife park with my family taking many different shots (just to gain experience) when I spotted this highland cow just resting with it’s hair flicked to one side and a single eye peering out watching the visitors go about their business. So I spotted the opportunity to capture an image that had a bit of character about it.

Editing

As I’m still learning about photography, at the time this image was taken I was still getting over the fact that post editing isn’t really cheating so I was wanting to keep the image as close to the original as possible so I only really tampered about with the exposure, brightness and contrast.

In my camera bag

As I only have a bridge camera there isn’t really much I have apart from the basics. Spare batteries, extra memory card. I do have a tripod but barely use it. One day I hope to get a DSLR so I can move my photography forward and learn about taken images with different lenses and off camera flash etc.

Feedback

I could probably only offer advice to people like myself who are trying to learn more about photography. They say that “for every 100 images you take you’ll only find one you really like”, ( or something similar to that) well I find this statement to be pretty accurate so don’t be discouraged by the photos that don’t turn out the way you planned cos you’ll get there in the end. Also, don’t be afraid of post editing. It’s a way to express your artistic side so just run with it.
