The white-throated kingfisher (Halcyon smyrnensis) also known as the white-breasted kingfisher is a tree kingfisher.
Kingfishers are a family of colourful birds which get their name from their accuracy at fishing. However, they do not just fish. With their long thick bill, they catch reptiles, amphibians and various invertebrates. They have a direct flight with rapid wing beats. Sexes are similar. They generally nest in banks, tree holes and sometimes termite mounds. They are generalist, eating any animal smaller than them that they can catch. In the 1800s these birds were hunted for their bright feathers that were used to adorn hats. It is the State bird of West Bengal.
