Behind The Lens
Location
We were living in an apartment we rented while our house was being remodeled. I was resting in a darkened bedroom whose window faced west.Time
I was resting in the late afternoon when my daughter came in the room to tell me something. The blinds were mostly closed but leaking horizontal stripes of light across her. "A classic picture," I thought so I told her to stay there while I got my camera and took a bunch of shots.Lighting
The lighting was a classic noir cliche but I'd never used it before so I thought I'd try for fun.Equipment
I had a Fujifilm S3Pro.Inspiration
Noir movies.Editing
I didn't have much time so I used Auto and the pictures were darker than I hoped for so I increased their lightness in processing but it made them grainier which I liked; more interesting and less cliched. In my camera bag
My Fujifilm S3Pro died so now I have a Nikon D3400.Feedback
Don't set up a shot specifically to get the effect. Wait for some lighting situation to naturally occur otherwise you create cliches. My daughter wasn't posing so much as standing there trying not to be embarrassed. Her innocence is natural and comes through.
