Uluru, or Ayer's Rock has several viewpoint from which sunrise and sunset on the Rock can be seen to best advantage. The sunset was a little disappointing, because of cloud, but the sunrise the following morning more than made up for it.

Behind The Lens

Location

I was on a tour of Australia's Red Centre. The guides know the best points to view sunset and sunrise on Uluru. The sunset was a bit of a washout, but the sunrise the following morning was everything they said it would be. This was, I think, the best one of the series I took, showing the subtle changes in the rock's colour as the sun rose.

Time

You need to get up early for this, and arrive at the viewpoint in almost darkness, for the is a very short twilight before the sun rises at this latitude.

Lighting

Natuarl light only

Equipment

Nikon D40X with a standard 18-55 lens; hand held

Inspiration

I'm informed Uluru is at its very best at sunrise and sunset.

Editing

No

In my camera bag

The Nikon D40X, a Gorillapod, a GoPro, spare batteries for both.I try to keep my kit to a minimum, especially if I'm moving around a lot.

Feedback

Have a look at the postcards in the souvenir shop, then try to get something different. Ask local advice on the best times and viewpoins, and, if you get time, recce these for yourself.
