This image was taken from the Ponte Umberto bridge in Rome.Time
This is definitely one of my favorite images. I went there with a friend of mine on a late June afternoon to set up and get familiar with the area, and to get some shots in varying light. We were there for several hours!Lighting
I love the way the man-made lights contrast with the atmospheric light as it gets closer to blue hour. For that reason, I prefer blue hour over golden hour when shooting cityscapes. This particular shot has a nice combination of yellows and purples that are very complimentary. I honestly wish there had been some clouds!Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D600 with a 70-200 VRII f/2.8 lens. And of course it was shot on a tripod to make sure it was sharp!Inspiration
It was my first trip to Rome, and I was so awed by the older classic architecture there, and of course who doesn't recognize St. Peter's Basilica?Editing
I was pretty lucky with this specific image in that I was able to do the post processing right in Lightroom. I did shoot brackets, but the camera gave me enough dynamic range that I was able to get what I wanted from a single file.In my camera bag
I use a couple of different cameras. I use the Nikon D600, with various Nikon lenses, and a Sigma 24-105 f/4 Art lens that is absolutely fantastic. For walking around and just getting some casual shots, I also have a Fujifilm X-T1 with an 18-55 f/2.8-4 lens that actually gives me some really nice images.Feedback
I would say that you have to have patience and keep watching the light. I shot hundreds of photos from this same spot at varying focal lengths and exposures, and even varying the composition a bit. We stayed and shot until way past blue hour and ended up going to dinner at 10:00 that night, but it was well worth it to get an image that I really like.
