Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Dikholo Game Reserve. It is located in North West Province, South Africa. I studied photography via e-learning.

Time

One of the best experiences in the resort is to cycle and see the animals in there natural environment. Just before dusk on the 6th of April 2017 we saw the mother and foal grazing. I had to stop (silently), get off the bicycle, get the camera out of the backpack, focus and shoot. All of this without disturbing the zebras.

Lighting

Dusk, according to me, is perfect when shooting outdoors. The ambient light (sunlight) gradually fades and it is not too bright. It creates an effect that is almost impossible to create artificially in nature.

Equipment

I used my Canon EOS 1200D and Canon EF 75-300mm f4.0-5.6 lll USM Lens. The setting were 1/50 sec., f/5,6, 170mm and ISO 100. I didn't use a tripod or any additional lightingfeautures

Inspiration

Animals are so good in taking care of their young and I love watching them. I therefore always tend to look for situations where mothers and babies are together in nature. An additional feature with zebras are the stripes. In this specific photo the black stripes of the foal and mother seems to flow into another that makes them more of a unity.

Editing

The only post-processing that was done, was to change the RAW image from colour to black-and-white.

In my camera bag

I always have my Canon EOS 1200D in my bag. The lenses that I carry normally along is the Canon 18 - 55mm and my favorite the Canon EF 75-300mm f4.0-5.6 lll USM Lens. When specifically shooting birds I will add the Tamron 150-600mm Telephoto Lens

Feedback

Patience and perseverance are key. In nature photography one has to find the right moment. Elements in general play a big part (sun, wind and rain). It takes time to seek and find animals in the perfect setting. It is important to be able to remain motionless for long periods of time. Movements should be kept to a minimum and if necessary be done slowly in an attempt not to scare/disturb the subject.
