I took this photo of our cat at home while testing old manual Russian Industar lens. It always makes me smile when I remember one of my colleague photographers saying that "Cats are the most popular models for lens testing!".Time
It was afternoon; therefore, natural lighting was sufficient and soft.Lighting
The shot was made indoors using natural daylight. It is less contrasty compared to the light from the flash, but I like its softness, especially for pictures that are not that sharp in focus.Equipment
My gear for this shot: Canon EOS 40D + Industar–61L/Z–MC (50mm f/2.8) with M42 to Canon adapter (with AF confirmation chip). This lens is a manual lens; therefore, focusing on moving subjects is always a challenge!Inspiration
There was no inspiration except a pure need to test the lens. And the cat was right on my chair! This way she became my model for this test.Editing
Yes, this picture was post-processed. Beside some basic adjustment of key parameters (highlights, shadows, vibrance, contrast) in Lightroom, some sharpening was necessary as the focus was too soft for me.In my camera bag
In my bag, I always keep all my stuff all the time to ensure that nothing is forgotten in case I must leave in a hurry. I have Nikon D300 body and a set of old primes including Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.4 D, Nikkor AF 24mm f/2.8 D and Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED. A Speedlight is a must too, and not only in low light conditions. Most of the time I use Nikon SB-900 flash unit. To work with old manual lenses, I also use Canon EOS 40D camera. It helps me to avoid adapters with corrective elements which are necessary for Nikon cameras to ensure focus at infinity setting.Feedback
Keep on trying! This shot was definitely not the one I planned and prepared for! However, having series of different shots of the same subject sometimes helps you to find that perfect picture. Don't save your clicks too much (especially if you have a moving subject).
