Location
I took this photograph from a beach area on the York River in Yorktown, Virginia. This is looking easterly across the Chesapeake Bay, towards the Eastern Shore of Virginia.Time
While having started this day well before sunrise, I had worked my way down the western shore of the York River, collecting hundreds of photographs. But this has always been one of my favorites from that day.Lighting
When it comes to lighting, for me nothing beats natural lighting! While I was using a Polarized filter, the clouds did a much better job of filtering the light that day! And of course, nothing beats the Sun for lighting possibilities!Equipment
This was taken free-hand, with my Nikon D5000, using my 18-55mm lens, with a UV filter.Inspiration
Having started before sunrise that day, I had already taken hundreds of shots along the York River as the sun was coming up. As I reached the end of my planned travels south, the clouds over the York river, Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean were changing quickly as the sun was rising. As the shapes and sun rays kept changing in the cloud bank that was putting on this show for me, I took many photographs. The shapes and sun rays at this moment in time, just called to my camera, "Don't miss this one!"Editing
No, I didn't do anything with this photograph. I have been told I should, before considering any prints. But to me, it was a moment, A moment I listened to that conversation between subject and camera, that I occasionally am blessed to overhear. In my camera bag
More than I should have! Yet never so much that I think I should reduce the weight. But generally speaking, besides the camera body, I have two lenses, a few screw-on pieces of glass and some filters. Batteries and a few chargers. Car, wall and laptop. Plus a brick. I hate to get somewhere, find beautiful subjects, with great lighting, then have to end things early, because I'm running out of juice! Same with memory. While not in my camera bag, I usually have a laptop handy, to dump some SD cards. Though in the last few years, I have added more SD and Micro SD cards that are faster and have more storage. But I am well over my old "film frugality" days, so I tend to click like crazy when there's something worth popping a lens cap! Oh yes, for some strange reason, I do carry the owners manual, too. One never knows...Feedback
The only advice I could give is to say that the only way to find something similar is to go out and find a place where you believe beauty can happen. No matter what the location is, beauty can be happening thousands of times a day. It all comes down to being in the right place at the right time, to allow "art of opportunity" to happen.
