Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken in Skagit Valley Washington in late December. Set up was on a bridge overlooking the river where the Bald Eagles were feeding off salmon

Time

The image was taken mid-morning with a grey overcast sky.

Lighting

Lighting was difficult because of the adverse weather. Snow and rain most of the day with low visibility. High shutter speed and high ISO was necessary to capture the birds in flight.

Equipment

The camera was a Canon 5D Mark III with a Canon 600mm F/4 lens mounted on a tripod with Wimberly Gimbal head.

Inspiration

I have always been interested in photographing birds in flight...especially bald eagles. The image was taken on a bald eagle wildlife photo shoot with Aaron Tours. The birds were amazing.

Editing

All post processing was done in Lightroom. Reducing the grain due to the high ISO was a challenge.

In my camera bag

Currently I have in my bag a Canon 1DX, Canon 5D Mark III, Canon EF 70-200mm II IS F/2.8, Canon EF 24-70mm II F/2.8.

Feedback

Birds in flight are a challenge...especially the first time. Be patient and use high shutter speeds.
