Behind The Lens

Location

The photo Sidewalk daydreaming was taken in the Old Town district of Helena, Alabama, a town approximately 20 miles south of Birmingham.

Time

the photograph was taken in late evening, sunset was probably an hour and a half away

Lighting

a good use of sunlight streaming through the porch and a white wall behind Arrendy, plus a metal silver tin roof make for a good fill

Equipment

Canon 5DMK II, my Canon 70-200 f2.8 lens

Inspiration

The Old Town district of Helena is a throwback to late 1800's early 1900's. Stores with wooden sidewalks and covered walkways. As we walked down one of the sidewalks, I noticed the light casting shadows from the railings, I then noticed that the end of the sidewalk framed some great Fall foliage. I had Arrendy sit in one of the chairs and took a few shots. I then asked her to close her eyes like she was daydreaming and a beautiful shot was created

Editing

The only thing done with the photo is color correction from AWB to Daylight.

In my camera bag

A Canon 5D MK II, and Canon 5Dmk III. Canon 70 - 200mm F/2.8 L , Canon 17 - 35mm F/2.8 L , Canon 24 -105mm F/4L, a Zeiss 35mm f/2 ZE, Zeiss 50mm F/1.4, Zeiss 100mm F/2.0 Makro Planar, A Canon 580EX Flash

Feedback

Study the light, In Sidewalk Dreaming the sun was streaming through the walkway opening at about a 2 o clock position, Arrendy turns her face slightly towards the camera and the white wall behind her gives a little bounce light back into the photo for some separation. When posing working and communicating with your model is important.
