Location
This photo was taken in North east DR Congo, in a town called Aru. The setting is a primary health care centre called IPASC (Institut Panafricain de Santé Communautaire et Medecine Tropicale).Time
People come to IPASC from miles around to learn about health care and for communal meals. The photo was taken during preparation for a meal in the mid afternoon.Lighting
There was a strong but diffused light from an overcast equatorial sun.Equipment
Canon EOS 40DInspiration
IPASC is the most amazing place. It has been destroyed by rebels and rebuilt in a different location by finances that had been sent from my church in the UK just before the catastrophic event. Its strapline ”A Healthy Community with its full participation” through being a centre of expertise for the improvement of health in Africa through a holistic approach, is embodied in the woman's face. She has a gentle but strong dignity. Where people are involved in their own health care rather than having it 'done to the', deep rooted growth can flourish. IPASC is founded with the biblical verse Micah 6v8 at its core.Editing
I simply converted to Black and White an tweaked the contrast. In my camera bag
Nothing else other than the Canon camera.Feedback
I spoke to the mother before I took the photo, talking about her child and asking if it was ok to take the photo. Because I was part of the team at IPASC that week, she trusted me.
