Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Sandwich Bay Bird Observatorys' Restharrow Scrape. Sandwich is a small medieval town on the East Kent coast.

Time

I took this photo at mid afternoon. It was a beautiful day and the sun was just in the right position to give excellent light for the photo shot.

Lighting

The goose walked out of the water right in front of the hide with the sun shining with just the exact amount of light needed to capture the water drops on the feathers

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon EOS 1200D with a Canon zoom lens EF 70-300mm USM. The camera was resting on the hide window ledge so partly hand held.

Inspiration

I had been in the hide for over an hour watching all the wildlife. Suddenly the goose and goslings started swimming towards the hide. Usually right in front of the hide is a no go area so I was very aware this coukd be a great opportunity and I was not disappointed...I got some great shots of Mother and babies

Editing

The only post processing I did was to slightly crop the photo.

In my camera bag

As well as my Canon 1200D and various lens such as a Canon Macro EFS 60mm, a Canon EFS 10-18mm, a Canon EFS 18-55mm and a Sigma 18-50mm wide angle lens. I have my main camera which is a Canon 5d Mark 111 with a Canon zoom lens EF 100-400mm. I aloso have various filters, gloves, remote shutter button, my tripod on the side and various other bits and bobs such as lens cloths. Makes for a heavy rucksack!!

Feedback

I always believe you have to be ready for anything. My favourite advice is to, as soon as you arrive, take some test shots to ensure your settings are right then ypu may only need slight adjustments to take a really great shot. Also be patient it can take a while to get the right shot but its worth it.
