Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a local wildlife preserve that I love to visit, especially in the spring when the babies are with their parents. Not only are there a lot of birds at this refuge, but the peace and quiet makes this a wonderful get away.

Time

This photo was taken about 30 minutes after sunrise. That particular morning there had been a fog which made photo conditions a little rough...but it broke just enough as this family of Tundra Swans swam out in front of me. The remaining fog in the background added a mysterious feel to the photo.

Lighting

The lighting on this was 100% natural, but the fog did soften the light and since it was right after sunrise the angle, coupled with the fog, made for a nice even light, soft highlights and shadows and a cloudy feel. The light is one of the reasons I love this picture.

Equipment

Canon 7D mk ii with a Sigma 100-300 f 2.8 lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

This was definitely one of those in the right place at the right time images, and I am glad that we was able to be a part of it.

Editing

I used Lightroom to add some vibrance to the picture but that is about it.

In my camera bag

Since that day I have quit using the Sigma 100-300 ens and have gone for a bit more reach with a Tamron 150-600 G2. The Tamron, coupled with my 7D mk ii has been a very fun lens to shoot wildlife with. I also always have a Sigma 18-55 F 2.8 with me as well for wide angled shots. Since I focus on wildlife I try to keep my gear to a minimum, and as I age that is becoming more and more of an need :)

Feedback

Get out early. Not only is the light best during the Golden Hours, but the wildlife are also the most active. It is also important to anticipate where the animal might come to...get there and wait rather than trying to stalk up on them and you will be more successful. The most important thing I would suggest is to have fun. Get out and enjoy nature, and take some pics along the way.
