During a fairly cold winter in 2013, the frost formed these gorgeous patterns all across my brother's car (though they were clearest on the bonnet). He was away at university, but had left his car at our parents' house in a village in Norfolk, UK, where I was staying at the time. I’m a hobby photographer, so I only have a simple camera, but every opportunity I have I try to find something new, especially in my local area.Time
I was just heading out to work, so it was about 8am. The night had been cold, and the morning sun wasn't yet warm enough to have melted the frost on the bonnet. I almost didn't notice the pattern at first, but had forgotten something inside, and saw it when I turned around to walk back. I ran back in, grabbed my camera, and snapped a few shots before needing to catch a bus. Thankfully, this one came out rather well!Lighting
It was simply natural lighting from the morning sun.Equipment
This was taken with an Olympus FE170-X760, a simple handheld digital camera. It was set with the function to reduce blur caused by camera movement whilst taking a photo and flash turned off, but I can't remember if I used a macro setting for this one or not.Inspiration
It was an elegant natural display on a man-made object. The patterns looked so much like feathers all across the car, and I wanted to capture the simple yet complicated beauty of the frost against a machine. Particularly since the use of cars / motor vehicles is ever-increasing, and a lot of nature is being lost.Editing
No post-processing for this photo, it's as it was.In my camera bag
At the moment, just my Olympus! Though I've recently got a phone with a decent camera and have been playing with that occasionally, I still prefer my old handheld.Feedback
Frost is an excellent source of beautiful natural patterns, and it forms on most surfaces. Just take a look around on a cold winter's morning. Also, even the simplest of cameras can take beautiful photos - sometimes you just have to play with the settings!
