Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the butterfly sanctuary at the Changi Airport, Singapore. I was trying to kill time in my long transit between flights, when I came across this sanctuary. It's filled with various butterflies and I couldn't miss the opportunity to take a few snaps!

Time

I can't quite remember the time of day, as I was quite jet lagged but it would've been approximately between 8 -9am Singapore time (as I remember having an early breakfast and then finding this place!)

Lighting

This was inside the airport, so there was a lot of artificial lighting from all sides, except for the one wall and ceiling which had natural light coming through. The light seen behind the butterfly is actually from inside the airport lounge area!

Equipment

I used my Nikon D7000 with the 50-300mm kit lens.

Inspiration

The beautiful butterflies are inspiring in itself! The way they gently flutter past you, something about them is just magical.

Editing

I brought out the shadows a bit. I am not very experienced in editing, so I stick to the basics!

In my camera bag

I'm a beginner in photography so at the moment, I have only the basic stuff in my bag. The Nikon D7000 kit lens 18-55mm, 55-300mm and a second hand 50mm 1.8G lens. I always have a handy air blower/duster and a lens cloth in the bag.

Feedback

It seems like a simple thing, but as a beginner, I used to make the mistake of not trying different angles. Always keep an eye on where the light is coming from and try different angles. In this shot, I crouched down a fair bit to get that light right behind the butterfly. I swear my legs were shaking from that position, but I got the shot I wanted!
