A Haleakala silversword at the top of Haleakala on Maui. Also known in Hawaii as ahinahina, these plants are endangered and endemic to Hawaii (the Big Island) and Maui. It is noteworthy that the silversword from each island are different subspecies. The silvery hairs that cover the leaves help protect the plant from the harsh environment. The hairs on the leaves make stunning reflective surfaces.
