Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the butterfly exhibit at the Vancouver aquarium in British Columbia Canada

Time

I remember this day clearly as it was part of a trip for my Wife and I’d first wedding anniversary. It would have been taken around 10:30am in the morning when all the butterflies were getting ready for their own daily routines!

Lighting

The butterfly exhibit is mainly lit with natural lighting and there happened to be a specific day of sunlight signing on the plants just below/behind the moth which made it stand out even more form its surroundings.

Equipment

This was just shot on my iPhone 8 Plus. I have my Nokia but didn’t bring it with me that day!

Inspiration

The exceptional beauty of the moth. As it is a butterfly exhibit everyone assumes that all of the bugs in the exhibit are butterflies. This made the picture even more with taking as it shows how breath taking something that typically is thought of as an ugly dirty bug can be!

Editing

All I did was change a couple light filters to darken the background and low light to really make the moth and plants stand out!

In my camera bag

I usually have my Nokia D3200 with me, but lately I have been using just my phone to capture the beauty around me as I don’t usually go out searching for these opportunities.

Feedback

Move around the animal, bug items etc that you are trying to photograph. Moving only an inch to the left or right can drastically change the colour, lighting and create and even more exceptional picture that what you initially thought. Look for those light and dark contrast between the background and what you want to photograph to really make them stand out!
