I took this photo whilst on holiday in South Africa. I was spoilt with having access to so many game reserves and amazing scenic places. Having the camera with me at all times. Recommend a visit for all photography enthusiasts, amateur and professionals alike.Time
Late afternoon. Great for photographers as natural light has slightly softened and with no flash, you are solely reliant on hopefully being in the right place, at the right time and with the best lightLighting
Lighting is extremely important to all photographers. If not using flash then it is essential to consider what the natural light is giving you. Is it ambient, is it softening or is it so bright that your shot could result in 'flat burn out'. Equally it's important to consider the impact of shadows. Could they enhance the picture or not? I was lucky with the sun being naturally full but low and not burning hot. This little creature was now ready for 'play/posing. He seemed as fascinated by me as I was him hence the wonderful capture as seen.Equipment
I shoot with a Canon 5d. Great camera, not too bulky/heavy and a fabulous fast motor for burst shots.Inspiration
A holiday in South Africa with amazing game reserves. All of its beautiful animals were great to try and capture. There is also something very cute and appealing about Meerkats so I was instantly drawn to taking his photo. Not only that he seemed to enjoy posing.Editing
The only processing undertaken post shot was to adjust the highlights and shadows within the image. I use Lightroom software for all my editing work post shoots. I do not use photo shop, although it is a great software tool, I just prefer the simplicity of the Lightroom tools and enhancements..In my camera bag
My Canon, flash, spare batteries, a flash hood and plenty of memory cards. I always double card when shooting as I don't ever want to risk losing great photo opportunities taken due to a faulty card. It happens! Not often but if it does and you have no back up then its a real downer. Cleansing cloths. Bin bags - just in case you are in a slightly damp area and need to get down low on the ground for a shot and don't want to get 'soggy'.Feedback
Have patience. Take your time to watch the animals natural activity. There is usually a pattern of behaviour followed by curiosity.
