This photo was taken at Fort Lee Historic Park near the George Washington Bridge in New Jersey. As the sun set and the lights of the bridge and New York City in the background started to come on, I captured what it's like to take a photo of this scene through an iPhone. I wanted to bring out the soft and beautiful lights of the bridge and the warm yet stormy colors of the sky. It was an amazing sunset in a perfect setting.Time
I took this photo toward the end of sunset, just before the sun set completely on the horizon. I remember seeing the sky turn to moody clouds and amazing lighting about 10 minutes before, so I knew I wanted to go to this spot quickly to get a good view of this exciting sunset. I made it there just in time to take in the beautiful view.Lighting
The light is so beautiful and intriguing in this photo because right before the sun set, it looked like there was going to be a storm. The grey clouds started to cover the sky and I thought it was definitely going to rain, but it held out and it made for a really cool effect. The different hues in the photo reflect the mood of that night's sky and made it all the more beautiful.Equipment
This photo was shot handheld on an Olympus OMD EM10, with a 14-42mm lens.Inspiration
I love discovering new places around where I live to take photos, and I had been wanting to find an interesting view of the George Washington Bridge at sunset for a while. So when I drove down to this park and explored it, I found that this spot was really special. I get excited when I see amazing golden hour light, and if it looks really incredible, I grab my camera and try to capture it in the best way I can.Editing
I did some post-processing mostly to bring out the colors of the sky. I increased the brightness and added some vibrancy to the sky, added some vignetting to focus the viewers attention to the phone, and increased the contrast to make sure the lights of the bridge popped out enough. In my camera bag
I normally have my other lens which is 40-150mm zoom lens, cloth to clean my lenses, an extra memory card, and the flexible Job GorillaPod tripod.Feedback
When shooting a landscape at sunset or sunrise, it's very important to pay attention to how the light is changing every moment. Being at the right place at the right time will really help too, but if you plan ahead and have a specific idea in mind of what you want to capture, it will be easier for you to go out and shoot what you want to shoot. So notice how the light is moving, make a plan, have your camera settings ready, a certain composition in mind, and then just work your creativity.
