Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my home studio in Dublin, Ireland, I'm a self-taught photographer.

Time

it was taken around 5 pm

Lighting

It was taken in manual mode, using natural light. Window light is some of the most beautiful, soft light for portraiture and beauty images. You can move the model in relation to the window to help choose how the light affects her face. When the model directly faces the window and you photograph her straight on, shadows are nearly eliminated.

Equipment

This was shot on a Sony ILCA-77M2 and a Carl Zeiss Vario Sonnar 2.8/24-70 ZA lens, no other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

Easter Holidays, toys, stuffed animals, Easter eggs, bright colours inspired me to take this photo.

Editing

I edit my photos in Camera Raw and Photoshop CS6

In my camera bag

The first thing I always pack is my Sony ILCA-77M2 (Reliable full-time subject tracking thanks to the newly developed high-density, wide-coverage AF system with world’s highest phase-detection AF point count*1 – 79 points*2 including 15 cross points, Translucent Mirror Technology delivers ultra-fast, intelligent AF tracking and up to 12 fps burst of up to 60 full-resolution framesand) and my Carl Zeiss Vario Sonnar 2.8/24-70 ZA lens it is my favorite piece of kit. I also pack my Sony 100mm f/2.8 Macro Lens, It has a fast maximum aperture of f/2.8 and can be stopped down to f/32 for advanced depth of field control.

Feedback

One of the biggest things that has contributed to my growth as a photographer, would have to be continuing to try to learn and grow. If I had just kept shooting in auto and not committed to learning to shoot in manual, I would have never gotten this far. When you’re using window light, be sure that it’s not direct light coming through the window and hitting the model, or the light won’t have soft qualities. You must wait until the sun is high in the sky or choose a window that doesn’t receive direct light.
