I took this picture in San Diego, CA (believe it or not). Yes, we actually get an occasional rain storm, however short lived they may be. It was a rare phenomenon and and as you can tell there was a lot of energy in the air ...and in these two little girls.Time
This is one of my favorite photos captured. This was taken in my front yard in the mid-morning hours. These two best friends were still in their PJs and as the rain and wind kicked up, quickly lost interest in morning TV and turned their attention to the outdoors. They kept referring to the tornado in the Wizard of Oz and grew a little fearful that our home was going to "lift-off and blow away." The wind was howling, rose petals and leaves were blowing about and these little girls were getting tousled about. But the great thing is they lost their fear of the house blowing away and gained a true appreciation and joy for mother nature in all her power.Lighting
The lighting was naturally fantastic. Stormy and gray and the rain brought some shimmer to the wet brick and the road in the background. Of course the polkadots on the umbrellas just POP and in my opinion, add even more of an element of fun to the picture.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D-80 and I think I used my Nikon 18-55 f3.5 lens, and used flash.Inspiration
I love capturing unplanned moments --un-staged, non-posed, just using the lens and a camera to freeze and capture cool moments caught of nature and of people. There's so much around us all the time that could just go unnoticed if we simply aren't looking. I love looking. Photography is one way for me to detach from all the busy in life and just lose myself in the present. I was so energized by the weather, these girls and their curiosity and their sense of adventure, that I grabbed my camera and umbrella and ran out the door right after them. I wanted to see their experience...I wanted to experience it. This photo captures an unplanned surprise moment and the image is one I treasure, even still, years after it was taken.Editing
I did not use any post-processing.In my camera bag
I usually just have my camera and 3 lenses - 18-55mm, 55-200mm and my Tamron 18-270mm.Feedback
Well I usually like receiving advice and am not typically one to give it. I'm a self-taught photographer. I learn a lot through trial and error and through the many talented photographers out there. Trust me, I take plenty of pictures that don't come out how I plan them to. As strange as it sounds, I often walk around closing one eye and looking at a scene through my partial view, to note whether or not I think its worthy of clicking a photo. Other times, I feel the energy of people or nature and I just want to find a way with my lens to express what I'm feeling in my present environment. I honestly believe that being present to the life around us--the energy, the light, the textures, the mood, etc, gives me most of what's needed to take a memorable picture every now and again. It's having both the patience to observe and the presence of mind to sometimes just jump in feet first to what's happening, point & shoot. All I know is I LOVE when I capture a moment that can be felt right through the picture itself--I guess we all do, and maybe that's something all photography-lovers have in common. Thanks for your interest in my photo. Happy clicking!
