Behind The Lens

Location

Devils Punchbowl Falls is one of New Zealand's top 10 photographed waterfalls, and is located in Arthur's Pass National Park in New Zealand's Southern Alps. Arthur's Pass Village is a 2 hour drive from Christchurch on the way through to the West Coast, and the waterfall is a 30 minute walk from the village. I grew up in Arthur's Pass, so I have visited the waterfall hundreds of times and know the area well.

Time

This image was taken about midday.

Lighting

The sun only gets in to the base of this waterfall for a few hours a day, and pool at the bottom is almost always in shadow. It's often difficult to get a shot where the whole waterfall is well lit. Most shots only show a portion of it, and generally include this tree, precariously perched on the cliff edge, as a point of focus.

Equipment

I've taken many images of this location, but I believe this was an early one taken with a Pentax K100d, Pentax 35-105 lense at ISO400, 1/60s, f5.6

Inspiration

I grew up around this waterfall, and when I moved back in to the area after taking up landscape photography, it was one of my favourite places to go. It was also featured in an advertisement for Air New Zealand, which prompted me to go back up and take this image.

Editing

This image is basically straight out of camera. It was taken fairly early after switching to digital photography, and was taken in jpg. Now I do all my photography in raw!

In my camera bag

These days I have quite a collection of gear in my bag. I usually have 3 cameras, NIkon D800, Nikon D7200 and a GoPro clone, lenses are a Tokina 12-24 f4, Tamron 28-75 f2.8, NIkon 80-200 f2.8 and a Nikon 50mm f1.4. I also have a range of ND and Polarising filters, Peak Design Capture Pro, Beike lightweight Tripod, LED Lensor torch and Leatherman multi-tool, along with assorted spare batteries and cleaning cloths!

Feedback

This is a good spot to go mid-afternoon when everywhere else is blown-out by sunlight. The sun is only really just starting to peek in to this valley at that stage, so you will still get good shadows but enough light that you can get some good images. Move around to get the best image. Be careful of the spray on your lens! Take your time and wait for the wind to throw the spray around.
