Behind The Lens

Location

I was working in a landfill site in Minden, Ontario. Obviously birds are constant companions to such a rich environment for scavengers - - for human as well as for critters. Watching was akin to envisioning how to take in a smorgasbord.

Time

Most days I began working probably an hour before scheduled to begin. I typically took stock of what had transpired since I had been in last. There were eagles and turkey bussards who sat perched patiently in the trees. Crow flew in gathering sworns all day. Seagulls argued over who should be higher on the food gain. They were vociferous in their posturing.

Lighting

I took the original and began playing with the effects of various fires because it dramatically altered the way I saw the world around me. All of my images get altered according to my mood.

Equipment

I had a Sony Xperia back then. At that time, it had the highest resolution of a cell phone camera available. Editing on such a camera provided a great deal of detail.

Inspiration

I take pictures of things because they hold my attention for some reason. I alter them in various ways because in my mind, there are almost always various scenes unfolding that are vying for my attention simultaneously.

Editing

Most of whatever treatments I use are whims or flights of fancy. I take pictures. Then something strikes me and I begin to play. I just keep fidgeting until I feel a sort of resonance. This was a rare moment. Often I overlay images and stretch or shrink the different layers. It may take an hour. Or just a few minutes.

In my camera bag

Just my cell of the moment. The idea was to keep my efforts affordable. A cell with a higher resolution requires a contract with my service provider. Typically I'll have my cell between 2 and 3 years. These days it's Huawei P 30 Pro. If one is limited with owning a cell phone VS purchasing a separate camera... This is how I stretch my resources.

Feedback

My focus has been about affordability of my access to toys. I have favoured Sony because they were geared to make their photographic equipment accessible to many. In the Huawei cell phones, Sony and Leica co-engineered a marvelous toy.
