Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in South Luangwa, Zambia - one of the best destinations for wildlife and photographic safaris.

Time

This was taken at sunset. We stopped to photograph the sunset overlooking the river, but the lighting hitting these hippos was too incredible not to focus on.

Lighting

Once the sun is near the horizon, the light changes quickly so it's important to be aware of your camera settings and to adapt frequently.

Equipment

Canon EOS 7D and 100-400mm

Inspiration

As a wildlife photographer you can't exactly stage moments with animals - so it's all about being responsive to what's happening around you and hopefully being quick enough to capture that moment.

Editing

Yes, but I try to keep it minimal. I pumped in a bit more contrast as the un-edited was a bit flat and I cropped in a little bit to add a better sense of balance.

In my camera bag

I try to travel light, but it's frequently 1x camera with a telephoto lens, 1x camera with a wide angle and a 100mm f2.8 with plenty of spare batteries and memory cards. Laptop and external hard drive is also a must.

Feedback

Be patient and be reciprocative of what nature gives you. Too often people want the big 'hero' shots and often ignore so many wonderful opportunities because they're too focused on what they want in their head. Keep your eyes open, shoot what you see, learn as much as you can about the wildlife you're around and have fun doing it.
